Johnson Family Ornament Picks for 2024

It’s that time of year to decorate our trees with beautiful, commemorative ornaments!

While we collect ornaments year-round, come December, we select a specific ornament to symbolize an especially treasured memory, moment, trip, or major accomplishment as our “annual ornament.” This year, each family member chose ornaments representing their most meaningful milestones from months past. Our ornament tradition means so much to us, allowing us to honor each milestone on our tree for all to see. Every ornament tells a story, and this year, our family has some memorable ones to share!

Take a look at last year’s selections and read on to see the ornaments we’re adding to our tree this holiday season!

Here are our annual ornament selections this year!

My ornament of choice this year is the Oyster Glass Ornament. Milton and I hosted our first-ever oyster roast over Thanksgiving this year, and our plan was to gather with family and friends to watch a whole lot of football and thought it would be fun to roast oysters and serve them with different sauces. We’d never done this before, and I love to commemorate any “firsts” that I can.

I couldn’t resist the O Holy Night in Color 100mm Glass Ornament to personalize with our family name and the year, “The Smiths 2024.” I adore the newer, more vibrant additions to our O Holy Night Collection this year, and the colors of this design will coordinate with my more colorful holiday décor.

For my daughter, Emma, to continue her collection from when we started it during her first Christmas last year, I chose the My First Birthday Girl Glass Ornament and will personalize it with “Emma 2024.” Since a baby’s first year is typically full of tons of milestones to mark, I also added the Baby’s First Milestones Glass Ornaments Set of 4, and plan to personalize these at home with a permanent marker to commemorate her first word, the date she took her first steps, and the date she grew her first tooth. We’ll have to wait to personalize the “First Haircut” until next year, perhaps...

I am adding Frosted Christmas Cookies 100mm Glass Ornament to my tree this year to commemorate a new tradition I started with my friends: a cookie baking party. I will personalize it with the year, a funny one-liner from the party, or my friends names!

This year, I am adding {and gifting!} the See You On the Slopes 100mm Glass Ornament. My husband, Whit, is a big snowboarder and growing up in Florida, I am quite literally the opposite. He grew up going out West every year during the holidays or winter, and he always talks about how he wants to continue that tradition for our family. This year, we plan to “gift” each other a ski trip in early 2025, so this ornament is a special way to bring the trip, gift, and tradition, to life so he has something to unwrap under the tree. Each year when decorating the tree, we will always remember the first year we went, and I plan to continue adding each year we go.

This year, I'm choosing the Our First Christmas Tree Glass Ornament as my family’s annual ornament. This is my first Christmas as Mrs. Vande Zande, it’s been quite the exciting year {with so many firsts!}. I’m most excited to add this to our tree and think back to our special weekend wedding in September. I personalized the ornament with, “The Vande Zandes 2024.”  to this special ornament!

This year, I also selected the Frosted Christmas Cookies 100mm Glass Ornament. Christmas cookie baking is a common tradition in Switzerland, where my husband René is from. It's common to use small cookie cutters and make several different patterns with several different doughs as well. For the last three years, my husband's sisters have visited us during Thanksgiving and have always arrived with cookie dough in tow. In Swiss German, these small little cookies are called Guetzli, Guetsli, or ChrömliWe bake these small treats while they are in town to kick off the Christmas Season. The blending of two cultures has been a fun new tradition for our family!

My family’s annual ornament is the Here Comes Santa Claus Glass Ornament. Our kids are so excited for Santa to come this year. With all three “understanding” the holiday, this is going to be a fun year watching the magic of Christmas unfold. We are already starting to write our lists and making sure we are being good boys and girls so Santa will stop by our house this year.... stay tuned for a fun surprise on Christmas morning! I am personalizing the ornament with, “The Gwynn Family 2024.”
