Bake and Make Mardi Gras Masks

Mardi Gras {French for "Fat Tuesday"} is celebrated every year to mark the beginning of Lent. Set 46 days before Easter on February 8th, it’s like one last excuse to party just before the solemn season of Lent begins. The city of New Orleans hosts the largest and most well known Mardi Gras celebration filled with fun, festivities and of course parades!

Surprisingly, it is a law that on Fat Tuesday, all float riders in a Mardi Gras parade must wear a mask. Remaining anonymous behind a Mardi Gras mask allows the float rider to do things he or she may not normally do during the parade. I'm still not sure if this is a good thing or not?!?  Hmm...

In any case, it's a fun celebration filled with beads and dubloons for all! If you're hosting a Mardi Gras celebration this year, you'll want to be sure and serve mask cookies with glittery goodness!

The TomKat Studio featured Sweetopia's cookie tutorial and we just HAVE to try these out this year.  With the exception of the tweezer step, they look pretty easy to make and will be sure to make a big statement at any Fat Tuesday festivity!

You'll need to use a mask cookie cutter to cut your cookie dough into mask shapes and then bake.  {You can use any kind of cookie dough, but Sweetopia used gingerbread.}  After the cookies have cooled, it's time for the fun part...  decorating them!!

Not to worry, if you don't have all the tools that Sweetopia used in her tutorials, we're betting you could get away with basic icing application and glitter dumping. *wink, wink*

Go decorate to your hearts desire and viola...  bake and make masks!
